Jacqueline Wilson: Opal Plumstead

Opal’s story is set in the run-up to World War I. Fourteen-year-old Opal's family falls on hard times when her accountant father is sent to prison. Her dreams about going to University are snatched away as Opal has to find work in the local sweet factory to help support her family. She encounters both bullying and friendship, encouragement in her art work, and an introduction to women's suffrage.
